About/À propos

Born in Montreal, Canada, Martine Viale now lives and works in Perpignan, France. Anchored in a practice of presence, her work aims to create installations grounded in performance. More recently, she has been focusing on creating works in the public space and unusual places that can facilitate unpredictable encounters with passersby. Through this process, she prioritizes the momentary loss of bearings and the use of actions as a tool for examining personal and social conditionings.

Working mainly in a durational format, she is inspired by the interval between art and the everyday and the multiple points where the two can intersect. she uses time as a driving force as well as a tool for spatial and relational negotiation.

Since 1999, her work has been presented in performance art festivals, galleries and site specific contexts throughout Canada and the United States as well as in Israel, Brazil, Cyprus, Serbia, Poland, Scotland, Spain, The Philippines, Japan, France, Belgium and Denmark.
